Adding or updating large MP3 directory freezes Audacious, any way to update in background while playing

Having several thousand MP3s on a HDD, when I go to update the playlist, the Audacious interface becomes unresponsive until the update is complete which can take several minutes. I am on 4.05 in Fedora. Is this expected behavior? Is there a method to let Audacious passively update folder contents in the background without disrupting the GUI and normal playback?
