SDL 16-Bit Limitation
Added by Jake Walker almost 9 years ago
Hi,
I am new to Audacious, and I use it to play mainly hi-fi FLAC files. However, my question is that since the SDL playback engine only supports 16-Bit audio, does that mean that the bit-depth of my 24-Bit files is being down converted to 16-Bit?

Yes, everything is currently played as 16-bit on Windows. Someday a native (DirectSound?) output plugin will be implemented.
Edit: Native Win32 output (waveOut API) is coming in Audacious 3.8.

John,
Thank you for your reply. What about on Linux?

On Linux, it will depend on how the system is configured, but the ALSA and PulseAudio plugins both support higher bit depths.
