Managing Audacious

Added by Nicholas Parrott over 3 years ago

I recently installed audacious as part of a move to shifting to Linux. I am incredibly frustrated with it (I am used to using Windows media Player). I have a music collection with about 20,000 titles in it. With Audacious I i) can't find way to toggle between the artist / song /album categories and ii) can't find a way to search for the music I want to listen to. (in WMP i would type in say 'Jon' if I wanted to listen to Joni, and it would also bring up Nora Jones and Rikki Lee Jones, so I could have an evening listening to 'female folkies'). I can't find a way of doing this in Audacious and have actually hardly listened to any music in the past three weeks (so am not a happy bunny). I have read a few posts on the forum that advise use function plus keys - but hey I am telepathic enough to know which one is which? That would be like going back to running my laptop on DOS. Can anyone offer practical or moral support here? Thanks in advance.

Keyboard shortcuts (also known as "keybindings" or "key bindings," can be found in several places, e.g. here:

https://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/xenial/en/man1/audacious.1.html

The ones shown here may or may not be applicable to Linux:

Otherwise, can't help as I don't use the app the way you do. Hope you can sort it out.

Thanks for that Steve - it really feels as if I have just jumped back thirty years. I will print off the listing but also look for a more user friendly media player.

"toggle between the artist / song /album categories"

I'm not 100% sure what you're describing here, but if you're looking for a browseable listing of albums/artists, Audacious doesn't provide that. It's more for playing and less for browsing music. You might want to try a "music manager" like Rhythmbox.

search for the music I want to listen to. (in WMP i would type in say 'Jon' if I wanted to listen to Joni, and it would also bring up Nora Jones and Rikki Lee Jones, so I could have an evening listening to 'female folkies')

Did you try the Search Tool? Click the "search" (magnifying glass) icon on the toolbar, import your library as prompted, and type "Jon" in the "Search library" field.
