Unusual appearence with Adwaita in Ubuntu 12.04/12.10 and Gnome-shell

I get unusual black bars in Audacious, around the library search and playlists (see screenshot). I don't know whether this is a problem with Audacious or something else, since no-one seems to have reported it but I have experienced it on two different laptops and three different installs. Thanks for any help you can give me :)

Also I know I'm using a different icon theme in the image, but changing it back to default makes no difference.

Is this only occurring with Audacious or also with other GTK3 applications?
What's the version of GTK3 and gnome-themes-standard?
Which graphic driver are you using?

I just found today that it also occurred with Rhythmbox (though only with a particular extension).
Gnome themes standard is version 3.6.0.2
Graphics driver is Nvidia proprietary, but only with Bumblebee so I imagine it's the Intel integrated chip driving Audacious.
