Multiple instances at differnt volumes?
Added by Chris Laurie about 8 years ago
Hi all
I eventually got round to compile the latest version with multiple instance support - on a Rasperry Pi 2 with Raspian. And it works very well - kudo's to the team. I have one question though. It seems that the adjust volume of Audacious sets the overall volume of the output of computer. This means that the 2 instances of Audacious plays at the same volume, if you adjust the volume with audtool then the volume of both outputs are at are same. My use case is community theatre and I run a background noise (say park noises) quite softly and then I want to have other effects that is a lot louder over that from the second player.
Is it a set-up issue on my side that the 2 instances don't operate at separate volume levels?

Volume control is one of the things that varies between different Linux setups. If you install a sound server such as PulseAudio or JACK, it will provide a per-application volume control. ALSA on its own does not. If you'd rather not run extra software on the little Pi, you can tell Audacious to perform its own volume control (in one or both instances) by checking the "software volume control" box on the audio settings page.

Thanks for the response. I saw that setting but there is a (not recommended) annotation, so being scared I asked first. What are the "dangers" of setting it on?

There will be some lag before volume changes take effect, that's all.
