"Add to Favorites" option and allowing to create a playlist of Favorites
Added by Pascual Lucero over 12 years ago
Hello,
I am facing the following situation: I have a big library, from tenths of thousands of files. Currently, I have several playlists in which I classify my music.
However, I want to select some of these files and copy them to the memory card of my phone.
On Audacious, the easiest way could be to create a new playlist of "Favorites" with only the files I intend to copy, select all the entries in the playlist and using the copy command so I can paste the files in the memory card. However, the process of creating this playlist is cumbersome, because the best way I have found so far is to drag every file I "like" (asumming the file is located in one of my large playlists) to the new playlist.
It would be much better if the following can be implemented: Once you select an entry, to have an option and a hotkey (when you right click) like "Add to Favorites". Then, in the same way you have a button to see the library, you could have a button (or a command) that shows the playlist of favorites you have added.
Is it possible to implement this idea? Any other alternative?
Thanks in advance!!
PS: I think the "favorites" idea is present in other media players and would satisfy the needs of many users :)

The way I've solved this for myself is creating a "best of" directory, containing symlinks to the original files. That way I can preserve the original albums, yet quickly copy or play only the songs I decided I like best.

Yes, but certainly this process is also cumbersome, unless you now beforehand the favourite music files. If Audacious has an option of "Adding to Favorites", you can add a file to a "Favorites Playlist" inmediately as soon as you listen to it and you like it. Is this a possible feauture for Audacious 3.3? Thanks

Is there a chance this possibility to add a favorite (bookmark) once I listen a song (which I like, so I want it to be "added to my favorites") and then activating a playlist with the favorites I have added? Is this a feature (present in other audio players) that can be implemented? Thanks

You can already do that. Create a playlist named "Favorites", and when you like a song, drag it to that playlist (hold down the control key to copy instead of moving it). Isn't that easy enough?

Hi John, thanks for the answer.
Well, there are several differences (I am thinking some player like Winamp, for example):
a) - Drag to that playlist could be cumbersome if you are managing about 10 playlists like I do. The current problem is that once you close a playlist, you lose it, there is no way to "hide the list" and show it only when it is needed.
b) - The last point indicates a difference in "favorites" management. Like winamp and other players, or like a web browser, "Favorites" is not something you show all the time, but something you only want to see once you press the button for doing that. So, the behavior would be like the button for the music library: you press the button and you see the library. So, if you have a favorites list, you press the "favorites" button (could be a star, which is the standard for bookmarks), that could be next to the library button ... and you see your playlist of favorites.
c) In that way, this "playlist" of favorites, is something that exists by default and you can hide and show with a button or a shortcut. Besides, like winamp does, you have an action (with the right button in the mouse or a shortcut) to select a file and "add the file" to "Favorites".
I hope (a), (b), (c) can explain why this feature is something you can't do already and something useful and basic in the organization of music files; it doesn't look too difficult to implement and it would be a nice addition to this wonderful player.

I can see how a "favorites" feature would make your specific use-case easier, but I don't think it's appropriate for inclusion in Audacious. Audacious is meant to play music, not organize it, and we specifically try not to add all kinds of organization features in order to avoid making the program more complicated.

Imho audacious is best audio player available on Linux due it's simplicity and should stay that way. However, "mark as favorite" would be very useful feature. In my case, i have quite big collections of music files. I have splited it to few playlists. There are too many anyway to remember, witch i like most and when i have mood for listening particular ones, i need to spend some time to find them.
So, why not to create pseudo-playlist "Favorites", add menu button "Add to favorites" and add new column to show that song is marked as favorite. It's won't be bloated change and KISS directive will be kept.
If You still don't want that as a part of official release, make a plugin.
For me, it's only one feature missing to satisfy my needs.
